Valentine’s Day Crafting: Pinwheel Rings

I’m a sucker for Valentine’s Day. I mean, what’s there not to like about it? There’s the paper goods, the candy, and of course, the candy. For a candy-holic like me, Valentine’s Day is up there on the hierarchy of candy holidays.

The boys and I hit the stores looking for some treats to mail to our friends for Valentine’s Day and as I slowly made my way down the featured candy aisles an idea hit me for a fun Valentine treat. This would be a really good party craft, as a make and take but today I made mine to be wrapped and  mailed to friends in far off zip codes.

So first we start of with supplies.

You will need:

  • Airheads Candy, assorted colors
  • Kitchen Shears
  • Cotton Swabs
  • Little cup of water
  • Buttons
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Toothpicks

The beautiful thing about Airheads is that they are so pliable and moldable. We discovered that with a little bit of water the Airheads were just like using clay or fondant. It sticks to itself and bonds. With a bit of pressure and the warmth from your hands, the Airheads will do your bidding. Oh the wonders!

Cutting down, now the assembly. (Feel to snack on the bits, you’ve cut off. We did. No piece went wasted.)

I did a little close-up of the holes so you can see that you should make them a little spaced apart. I poked the holes too closely the first time and was saddened when it fell apart. (Seamus wasn’t saddened at all since he was eating the casualties.)

Once you’ve pulled the button through you can feed each pipe cleaner through its own hole. Then use your own finger as a template and tie a little knot. You can wind the pipe cleaner back on itself to make it neat ring or just cut the excess off. Whatever works for you!

I adore any jewelry that you can wear AND eat. Seriously. You could take your ring and put it on the top of a cute paper straw as a fun way to display your pinwheels atop a cake or cupcakes or you could just package them up in a clear treat bag to give to your friends. Because everyone needs some Valentine’s goodness.
